USA Fulbright Scholar Program 2027

USA Fulbright Scholar Program 2027; Amazing opportunity

The USA Fulbright Scholar Program closes on October 28, 2026, which is 18 days after the day we checked, and it is not the Fulbright for students. This is the Pakistan commission’s program for people who already hold a PhD or terminal degree. It funds up to 10 months of lectureship, post-doctoral research, or a mix of the two at a U.S. college or university.

The page is run by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and is written for Pakistani scholars: your proposal has to explain how the U.S. stay relates to your work in Pakistan. Applications are online only, and you need at least one invitation letter from a U.S. university when you submit. If you are a graduate student looking for a Master’s or PhD scholarship, this page is not the right one, and the table below shows where to look. As of October 10, 2026, the Scholar Program is open.

Who Can Apply, and Who Cannot

Scholars and professionals from all disciplines are welcome, except clinical medicine. You must hold a PhD or terminal degree in your field. You need excellent written and spoken English, a clear and well-formed proposal, and, for a lectureship, a demonstrated ability to teach in a university setting. USEFP says the proposal is the most important part of the application.

Check the Ineligibility List First

You cannot apply if you completed your PhD within the last two years, or if you have been to the U.S. for research or other long-term educational opportunities within the last five years. Dual U.S./Pakistan nationals are ineligible, and so is anyone whose spouse, parent or child over 18 is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Employees and dependents of USEFP or the U.S. Department of State are out, and so is anyone already studying in the U.S. or holding a work or residence visa in any country.

There is one wording gap. The eligibility section requires a PhD or terminal degree. The FAQ on the same page says an applicant must hold one, or be a distinguished leader in the field, and speaks of scholars, professionals and artists. If you do not hold a PhD, ask USEFP before you decide.

What Your Application Must Contain

A complete package has three parts, and USEFP will not consider incomplete applications:

  • An application form, filled in online at USEFP’s application portal.
  • Three reference letters. USEFP suggests someone who knows your work and character well. A well-known name in your field helps, but it is not the main test. A professional reference who knows you well is also acceptable.
  • Invitation letter(s) from U.S. universities. You must have at least one when you apply, and it must be submitted with the application.

Orbit Take

The invitation letter is the slowest part, because it depends on someone in the U.S. and not on you. The page requires at least one at submission and does not say what the letter must contain, so a scholar who has not yet contacted a U.S. host will find 18 days short. Our reading is that the proposal and the invitation letter are tied together: the proposal explains what you will do, and the host explains why they want you to do it. USEFP also says there is no formula for a winning application, so do not copy a template. For reference letters, a form is linked from the program page, and you can ask your referees to write it early.

Notes for Pakistani Applicants

What Pakistani Applicants Should Know

No English test is required for this program, according to the FAQ. USEFP says it will help with the visa process, and the grant covers one accompanying dependent, with no restriction on bringing others, though you pay for the rest. If you have questions, USEFP lists these offices: Islamabad 051-8431300, Lahore 042-35762467, and Karachi 0300-050-6173. The page does not state how many awards are given, the stipend amounts, or how selection works beyond the proposal, so we cannot give those figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an English proficiency test?

No. USEFP says this program does not require one, but successful candidates are expected to have excellent written and spoken English.

Can my family come with me?

USEFP says there are no restrictions on accompanying dependents. The program funds only one accompanying dependent, and the scholar is responsible for the rest.

Do I need an invitation letter before I apply?

Yes. You need at least one invitation letter from a U.S. university, and it must be submitted when you apply for the grant.
