The University of Western Australia’s HDR Scholarship 2027
The University of Western Australia’s HDR Scholarship 2027, Before you spend a weekend on an application, confirm one thing. If you are searching for an international scholarship in Australia, note that the round’s “international” element is limited: this is not a general international scholarship round. It is open to domestic applicants and to a defined group of UWA International graduates. Most readers of this site will need to read the eligibility section first.

UWA states that the round opens and closes in Australian Western Standard Time and that late applications will not be accepted. Pakistan Standard Time is three hours behind AWST, so the closing moment falls at about 8:59pm on 31 October in Pakistan. That conversion is our own arithmetic, not UWA’s wording, so check it against your own clock settings.
Who can apply
UWA lists several conditions. In plain terms, you need to:
- meet the admission requirements for the HDR course you choose;
- be a domestic applicant, meaning an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen, or be a UWA International graduate;
- be available to start by the commencement date advertised for the round.
“UWA International graduate” has a specific meaning here. It covers a UWA International student who graduated in 2025 or 2026, or who will finish their qualifying degree by the end of 2026. Applicants finishing their qualifying degree at the end of Semester 2 2026 can apply, but their final results must be available when ranking takes place.
Two limits matter a great deal:
- UWA International graduates compete for a small pool of international scholarships. They are not treated as domestic applicants and cannot be given a domestic scholarship.
- Current UWA international HDR students who have not graduated from UWA before, or who graduated before 2025, are not eligible in this round.
What Pakistani Applicants Should Know
The official page does not mention any country-specific route for Pakistan. Based on the stated eligibility rules, an applicant who is neither a domestic applicant nor a UWA International graduate does not fit this round. If you are a Pakistani citizen studying or graduating at UWA as an international student in the window described above, you would be in the small pool of international scholarships that UWA describes for UWA International graduates. If you are applying from Pakistan with no UWA degree, this round is not the right target, and you should look at UWA’s other scholarship listings on the same portal or at other providers.

Not eligible for this round? Zorvia Magazine has a separate guide to another scholarship option: Chinese Government Scholarship. It is a different program in a different country, so check its official provider page for current rules before applying.
What the scholarship gives you
The official page describes a stipend of AUD $39,253 per annum. It can be held for up to two years by Masters by Research candidates and up to three and a half years by Doctoral candidates.
UWA also says that applying to this round automatically puts you in consideration for all other available scholarships included in the round. You do not file a separate form for each one, although UWA notes that anyone applying for a philanthropic award should check that award’s own requirements and include any statements it asks for.
The page does not say whether this scholarship covers tuition fees, health cover or relocation costs, so this guide does not make any claim on those points. Ask the Graduate Research School before you plan your budget.
How selection works
The UWA HDR Scholarships Committee awards scholarships through a competitive process. Applicants are judged on:
- academic achievement;
- research potential, shown through research experience, outputs, publications and other research achievements;
- whether suitable supervisors, facilities, equipment, funding and resources are available.
UWA says priority may be given to people enrolling in an HDR for the first time. In practice that means applicants who have not previously completed a research doctorate or a research masters (unless going on to a research doctorate), have not held an Australian Postgraduate Award or similar government-funded research award, and have not already received a stipend scholarship or a scholarship meant to offset HDR fees.
Reality Check
The supervisor requirement is the step most likely to decide whether you can apply at all. UWA states that applications without evidence of agreed supervision will not be considered, and that supervision may be unavailable for a variety of reasons. With one month in the window, contacting potential supervisors is the first task, not the third.
How to apply
UWA’s applicant advice sets out five steps.
- Check eligibility and course rules. Read the admission requirements for your chosen course in the UWA Handbook.
- Secure a supervisor. Search the UWA Research Repository for researchers in your field, then email them directly with your CV, a short outline of your research and your academic transcripts. A supervisor may ask for an interview. Keep the email or other written evidence that they agreed to supervise you, because you must submit it.
- Prepare your documents. Everything must be uploaded as PDF at the time of application.
- Apply online. New applicants choose their course and select the 2027 Domestic HDR Scholarship Round in the HDR application portal. This one application covers both admission and scholarship. People who are current HDR students, or who already hold a UWA HDR offer letter, apply only through the online scholarship application form.
- Wait for the result. UWA emails the outcome to the address registered in the portal. Successful applicants receive offers for both the scholarship and admission to the course.
Documents UWA lists
- A current CV with the names and contact details of two academic referees. Referee letters are not mandatory; listing the referees in the CV is enough.
- Proof of identity or status, such as a passport bio page, birth certificate, citizenship certificate or Australian visa grant notice, where applicable.
- Evidence of a name change if your documents carry different names.
- Evidence that you meet the HDR English language requirement.
- Final official transcripts, with the grading scale, and degree certificates for all tertiary study, including incomplete degrees. If final transcripts are not ready, upload your current transcript showing all units completed so far.
- Your thesis or dissertation as submitted for examination, with an English transcription (it does not need to be an official translation).
- Official translations of any other document that is not in English.
Important Warnings
A submitted scholarship application is final. UWA will not return it for editing and will not consider requests to add or delete documents afterward. Late applications are not accepted. UWA may also ask for original transcripts and degree certificates at any time to check authenticity, and your scans must meet UWA’s specific scanning requirements. Applications apply to UWA only and remain UWA’s property.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate scholarship application as a new applicant?
No. UWA says the HDR application portal covers both admission and scholarships for new applicants, so you select the scholarship round within that application.
Can I study part-time on this scholarship?
UWA expects full-time study on a UWA campus. Part-time may be approved for domestic applicants only, and only with compelling reasons such as a medical condition or primary care commitments. UWA states that work is not a compelling reason.
Do I have to upload reference letters?
No. UWA says referee letters are not mandatory, and providing two academic referees’ details in your CV is sufficient.
