OPay Partners with University of Uyo to Launch ₦1.2 Billion Scholarship Scheme for 20 Students

In a landmark move to support quality education and empower young Nigerians, OPay, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech companies, has unveiled a ₦1.2 billion scholarship program in partnership with the University of Uyo (Uniuyo). This initiative is part of OPay’s broader national education support program aimed at providing financial relief to intelligent yet underprivileged students across Nigeria.

About the OPay–Uniuyo Scholarship Initiative

OPay’s newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Uyo officially brings Uniuyo into its ₦1.2 billion national scholarship scheme. As part of the agreement, OPay will award scholarships to 20 exceptional undergraduate students annually, each receiving ₦300,000 to support their tuition and academic-related expenses.

The scholarship will span 10 years, delivering ₦120 million annually to the selected institutions and ultimately amounting to a total investment of ₦1.2 billion. This is one of the most substantial long-term educational funding initiatives by a private company in Nigeria.

Purpose of the Scholarship

The primary objective of the scholarship is to alleviate the financial burden many university students face, especially those from low-income families. By providing this financial support, OPay aims to ensure that brilliant students can concentrate on their academic pursuits without being distracted by financial worries. According to the company’s leadership, this scholarship is not just a donation—it is an investment in Nigeria’s future.

What Beneficiaries Stand to Gain

Each of the 20 selected Uniuyo students will receive:

  • ₦300,000 annually to cover tuition, books, and other educational needs.

  • A place in a well-structured and reputable scholarship program run by a trusted fintech company.

  • Mentorship and support through a program that encourages academic excellence and integrity.

This funding is expected to significantly enhance the learning experience of beneficiaries, enabling them to complete their studies with peace of mind and increased motivation.

A Step Toward National Educational Transformation

While this partnership with Uniuyo is recent, OPay’s educational funding initiative is not new. The company has already signed similar agreements with several top Nigerian institutions, including:

  • University of Calabar (UniCal)

  • Benue State University

  • Kwara State Polytechnic

  • Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU)

  • Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

  • University of Ibadan (UI)

  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)

With a total of 20 tertiary institutions targeted, the OPay scholarship program aims to support 400 students annually, spreading its impact across multiple geopolitical zones and fields of study. This approach reflects OPay’s commitment to promoting inclusive education and national development.

Statements from Stakeholders

During the official signing ceremony at Uniuyo, OPay’s Managing Director, Dauda Gotring, emphasized the significance of the partnership. He stated:

“This ₦1.2 billion 10-year scholarship programme is not just about supporting today’s students but investing in Nigeria’s future.”

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo also expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a welcome contribution to the university’s academic mission and the Nigerian education sector at large. He noted that this scholarship will go a long way in helping students remain focused and committed to their studies.

Selection Criteria and How to Apply

Although the specific selection process for Uniuyo has not yet been detailed publicly, previous OPay scholarships in other institutions have been merit-based and need-sensitive. Typically, selection involves:

  • Academic performance (minimum CGPA or admission scores)

  • Proof of financial need

  • Recommendation from academic authorities or deans

  • Interview or screening (where applicable)

Interested Uniuyo students are encouraged to stay updated through the university’s official communication channels or visit OPay’s website for announcements regarding application deadlines and procedures.
